David Orr is executive director of the Oberlin Project, a joint effort of the City of Oberlin, Oberlin College, and private and institutional partners to improve the resilience, prosperity and sustainability of the community.

The Oberlin Project's aim is to revitalize the local economy, eliminate carbon emissions, restore local agriculture, food supply and forestry, and create a new, sustainable base for economic and community development. Dr.Orr will be exploring the lessons that the Oberlin Project can lend to similar projects across the country.

David W. Orr is the Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics at Oberlin College and a James Marsh Professor at the University of Vermont. He is perhaps best known for his pioneering work on environmental literacy in higher education and his recent work in ecological design.

He holds a B.A. from Westminster College, an M.A. from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania. He serves as a trustee for several organizations including the Rocky Mountain Institute and the Aldo Leopold Foundation. In 1996, he organized the construction of one of the greenest buildings in North America, the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies at Oberlin College.

Orr is the author of four books: The Last Refuge: The Corruption of Patriotism in the Age of Terror; The Nature of Design; and Earth in Ecological Literacy. He has published 120 articles in scientific journals, social science publications, and popular magazines.
