the PERC 2010 Fall Conference, featuring speakers from leading colleges and universities, funding agencies as well as Second Nature President Tony Cortese as keynote speaker. Mr. Cortese is internationally recognized as one of the leading voices addressing higher education's role in increasing sustainability. This PERC conference will be held in Ballrooms A&B of Penn State University's Nittany Lion Inn in State College, PA on October 20th, 2010 from 9:00am – 2:30pm (checkin opens at 8:00am, informal networking after ends at 3pm).

We are in extraordinary times with unprecedented opportunities to restore our environment and our economy--and higher ed has a crucial leadership role to play. “Building a Sustainability Community in Pennsylvania” will be this year’s largest gathering of colleges and universities committed to sustainability in Pennsylvania. It will be a unique opportunity to network with fellow educators, researchers, and sustainability officers from across the Commonwealth. Also featured will be specific discussions around two fundamental themes:

ENGAGING PEOPLE: Effective new strategies for engaging employees and students in the creation of a sustainable campus and world. Find out about:

Fun and results-oriented ways to engage staff, administrators and faculty such as Penn State’s new Green Teams Program.
New Student Eco-Rep Programs at Dickinson College and other schools

FUNDING SUSTAINABILITY: New state and federal funding opportunities featuring presenters from various agencies and organizations such as the Department of Environmental Protection, Sustainable Energy Fund, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The conference is designed to allow for discussion and networking among the many people active in sustainability in Pennsylvania’s higher education community as well as highlight leading programs and provide attendees with models they can quickly replicate at their own campuses.

At the conference, PERC members and affiliates will explore how PERC can help support their efforts, discuss priorities, and organize next steps. PERC will also be demoing the social networking capabilities of its newly deployed website and revealing its new technical team committee structure – resources that will help build a community for sustainability in the state.

Anthony D. Cortese, ScD is co-founder with U.S. Senator John Kerry (D-MA) and Teresa Heinz and President of Second Nature, a nonprofit organization with a mission to develop the national capacity to make healthy, just, and sustainable action a foundation of all learning and practice in higher education.

He is also a co-organizer of the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment and co-founder of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. He is co-founder and co-coordinator of the Higher Education Association Sustainability Consortium and a consultant to higher education, industry and non-profit organizations on institutionalization of sustainability principles and programs.
